Chart Watch

Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" moves up to the 1 spot this week, making it her 18th and subsequently, surpassing Elvis Presley's 17. Only The Beatles with 20 stand in her way for the Billboard record. Putting Carey up in the ranks with Elvis and the Beatles seems laughable, but she is able to recognize that. "I really can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionized music but also changed the world," Carey told The Associated Press on Tuesday via phone from London. "That's a completely different era and time ... I'm just feeling really happy and grateful." Sure she has had massive success and massive sales, but how many average Joe can name a handful of her hits, compared with Elvis' whose are decades older?

Madonna also beats one of Elvis' records this week, for most top 10 hits as her "4 Minutes" with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland goes from 68 to 3. The only question is if "4 Minutes" can knock "Touch My Body" out of the top spot in an epic battle of female superstars. Madonna now has charted 37 top ten hits. Once again, how many people can name a Madonna song that didn't get to #1 versus a Mariah song that did. "Material Girl" over "Don't Forget About Us"? Mariah's cultural significance aside, she's done it. Well done.
