Hey Mama: A Tribute to the World's Best Mom

"I wanna tell the whole world about a friend of mine
This little light of mine and I'm gonna let it shine
I'm gonna take y'all back to them better times
I'm gonna talk about my mama if y'all don't mind"
- Kanye West, "Hey Mama"

Time magazine recently released its list of the top 100 most influential people.  The list included former President Bill Clinton, pop singer Lady Gaga, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs.  Each person on the list has done something to make a positive change in the world or change the way people think about things.

This Mother's Day, I can't help but think one of the most influential people in my life, my mother, Joan Schwarz.  Today, mothers around the world are receiving mugs and recipe holders made from clothes pins and Popsicle sticks that say they are the world's best mom.  Although I have nothing against all those amazing mothers, I would have to disagree and say that my mom is the best.

Find me a woman who looks as stunning and classy as my mom does.  They are far and few between, and I'm going to guess that most of them haven't raised nine kids.  Find me a woman who has changed dirty diapers for over two decades, logged countless hours driving her kids around, and has so many clothes to wash that we have two washers and dryers.  She does all that without complaining.  Like I said, the best.

I look at the immediate influence my mother has had an I'm amazed.  She made my dad a better person (that's why he married her), and has influenced her nine children for good.  She's raising five daughters to be bright, strong, virtuous and beautiful woman who will respect their womanhood and themselves be amazing mothers.  Every life she touches she does so for good whether it be in church service, the community, her childrens' school and programs, or strangers she meets.

Her immediate impact might seem small if you compare it to Bill Clinton or Lady Gaga, but my mom's influence extends beyond those she directly interacts with.  Her husband and children interact with people on a daily basis, and I hope that we can make the world a better place with those we come in contact with just like she has.  My mother's reach isn't limited to her friends and family, it's exponential.  Her kindness, selflessness, and smile are contagious.

This Mother's Day, I want to let my mom know that she is the best mom in the world.  And I want to dedicate a song to her.  Mom, I know how much you love your sons listening to rap, but this one's for you:
