Worst Summer Ever? 'Shrek' Conquers 'Sex'

So far, the answer is yes.

The 2010 summer season is shaping up to be one of the worst of all time. Even the huge, supposed-to-be-popular movies' ticket sales are well below expectations. This year, people are apparently staying home rather than going to see a variety of unappealing sequels, spinoffs and remakes. There are still some movies yet to come this summer that could help rescue the remaining months. But so far, Hollywood hasn't given us much reason to check out the latest potential blockbusters.

Last weekend (June 4 to 6) was down in receipts 24 percent from the same weekend last year (which is when 'The Hangover,' a surprise non-sequel hit, was released) and down 29 percent from the same weekend in 2008 (release of another non-sequel hit, 'Kung Fu Panda'). According to the Los Angeles Times, total box office receipts for last weekend's Memorial Day holiday were the lowest for the holiday weekend since 2001 and the least number of tickets sold since 1993.

'Shrek' and 'Sex and the City 2' each had a dismal opening weekend, making tens of millions of dollars below their predicted debut targets.

However, 'Shrek' has managed to remain the top-grossing movie for three weeks only because the competition (including 'Sex 2,' 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,' 'MacGruber,' 'Get Him to the Greek') has been even weaker. And this 'Shrek' is the worst off in the box office of all 4 'Shrek' movies.

So what do we have to look forward to the rest of the summer?
Toy Story 3 opens June 18th
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens June 30th (a sure hit in Utah with midnight showings already sold out, but maybe no where else)
The Last Airbender opens July 2
Inception, starring Leo DiCaprio, opens July 16 (This is a Warner Bros film by The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan)

I can't wait for Last Airbender and Inception. Until then, I will probably only go to the dollar theatre to see Iron Man 2 again.

Kudos to Shrek. Who would have thought that it'll beat SATC. I'm looking forward to Eclipse, Last Airbender (more excited) and Inception.
