It has been only 14 months since Janet Jackson signed with Island Def Jam, but after the flop that was her debut release for the label, Disicipline, the two have parted ways. Miss Jackson (if you're nasty) claims that her label, "stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album" after the first single "Feedback" failed to make any radio wave nipples...I mean ripples. Hey, isn't that what Michael complained about when Invincible sucked it up in the charts? Regardless, Disicpline has only sold 415,000 in the the United Stead and spent a meager 14 weeks in the Billboard album charts.Now that Jackson is without a label, she plans on going indie. Boyfriend and Island Def Jam Urban President Jermaine Dupri said that Janet, "will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system. Always known to break new ground and set trends, Janet's departure from Island makes her one of the first superstar artists to have the individual freedom to promote their work through a variety of avenues such as iTunes, mobile carriers and other diverse and innovative channels." Maybe Live Nation will want her. Maybe not.

The cougars love Justin Timberlake. Janet let him rip her clothes off. Now she's struggling to survive in an industry dominated by youth. Then Madonna made a song with him about saving the world. They yoga danced together and then almost made out but that ominous black mass reaches them before they can seal the deal. (Good thing they didn't because she's old enough to be his mother...and Britney and Christina's...) Although Madonna isn't at the top of her game anymore either, she's miles away from where Janet is. Janet needs a major hit and a major comeback or the days of Jacksons ruling the charts will finally be at an end.

By teaming up with Timbaland and Timberlake, Madonna essentially sold out for a hit but at the end of the day, she's 50 and more relevant than Janet Jackson at 42. If you want to keep selling records and get your songs on the radio, you have to sell out initially, then you become big and have some time to make artistic statements before new young stars threaten to take your place and you have to go back to selling out. If you don't care about getting your songs on the radio, you keep making music you want to make and screw everyone else. Less royalties but more artistic integrity.
