The Meaning Behind Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" Music Video

The music video for Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" was released today, and in what has becoming standard Gaga fashion, it clocks in at just under nine minutes.  Nothing in the video is reminiscent of things that are "hot like Mexico", instead it's all Nazis and shirtless Beatles (or are they headed to a Three Stooges convention?).  Earlier today, the video's director, Steven Klein, talked to Rolling Stone about the meaning of the video.

"She likes epics. It fits her personality. We combined dance, narrative and attributes of surrealism," Klein said. "The process was to express Lady Gaga's desire to reveal her heart and bear her soul."  Although the video seems highly political, Klein commented that, "the politics came out of the story, but was not the official intention."

The Internet has been abuzz with people discussing their theories behind the clip's meaning.  Sean S. on EW said, "To me, the story/point seems to be addressing gays in the military and religious persecution and the death/killing of love. Everything from the “puppet strings” to the crucifix in the mouth would seem to support that storyline."

One blogger's mom wrote, "Madonna is going to be pissed to be ripped off so blatantly.  Or shall I say one-upped...the nun's habit in latex, swallowing a rosary, strategically placed crucifix and the machine gun bra definitely are sings she's thrown down the gauntlet!  Still love the song even if the video is just the 2010 version of "Like A Prayer".

Gaga has her share of critics who believe she is a puppet of the Illuminati, and judging the amount of times she only had one eye showing or the times you could spot a triangle, there are sure to be people who say the video was actually conceived by the devil.  Why else would she eat rosary beads?

Of course, some people think the video has no deeper meaning.  The bowl cuts for instance, weren't an order from Frau Gaga, they were actually drawn from a recent photo shoot taken by Klein.

"I don't think there's much hidden meaning in this video at all, other than the red-painted cross at her crotch that could be her laughing at the rumors that she has a male member," said a CMR writer.

The video ends with Gaga lying motionless on a bed next to a motionless man, both of them attached to puppet strings.  The clip then burns out from the center, similar to the ending of the film Two-Lane Blacktop, which creates the haunting subliminal image that flashed during the video's preview clips.  How sure are we that there wasn't anymore subliminal images thrown into the real video?  If you have an unexplainable inkling to wear cigarettes as sunglasses, resist.

[Edit: Hours after the video premiered, MTV e-mailed Klein to ask him directly the meaning of the video.  Here's what he had to say:

"The religious symbolism is not meant to denote anything negative, but represents the character's battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the Soul," Klein wrote. "Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation."
Klein added that the scene in which Gaga ingests the rosary beads is meant to represent "the desire to take in the holy."

LADY GAGA IS AWESOME! THE VIDEO IS IN NO WAY EVIL! IT IS A CREATIVE EXPRESSION OF GAGA'S HEART AND SOUL! POP MUSIC IS JUST THAT. A 'POP' OF CREATIVITY AND EXPRESSION. THE VIDEO SHOULD BE ALL THAT AND MORE. GOD BLESS LADY GAGA! SHE IS AMAZING! ALL YOU OTHER PEOPLE CAN KICK ROCKS WITH AN OPEN TOED SHOE!

Good music, terrible personality. Absolutely awful personality. Anything that comes out of her imagination is a gross stab at being wierd and shocking. Seen with a little clarity, its really all just rubbish.

The Video is amazing! I love the song....
But, I just understand what is the meaning and the story of the video... Can someone explain this?

Imone, although i do agree that she is amazing, the pop in pop music is actually short for popular.

If you're going to appreciate the video and say it's beautiful and deep, at least know what it really means. Don't like it because it's different, and you want to be different.

As much as I love Gaga, this video was honestly just disturbing and insulting to my religion.
and what is up with the nazis?
That's so offensive to others.
and honestly no one can be different from one person or the other, cuz everything that can be invented has already been invented.
It's just a development of something else.
This music video has changed my mind about gaga completely.

I loved the video. Honestly the woman is a genius, and even if you don't like the video or the message it conveys, you at least have to appreciate the fact that she is bringing back the music video event. The guy who directed the video gives a clear explanation for what it's about. It's about losing love and never being satisfied after you have lost it, and trying to find other ways to give it. It also pays homage to the gay community. The nazi's are a symbol for the bondage and oppression of the gay community in our military and society. All the religious stuff is symbolic for where we look for answers through hardship after love, life, and anything else. The director explains it all here http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1641149/20100609/lady_gaga.jhtml

i think there was a deeper meaning here and that people should not be getting insulted so easily. If you don't know what the deeper meaning is, then you can't be insulted by the video because you have no clue what it's about.

probably her best video that has any 'deep meaning' in it, but how can we be sure that its personally Lady Gaga's ideas that are being used, and since when is groping guys on video symbolic to anything? I'm sure I don't wana see anything like that, art doesnt have to involve anything sexual, and in this case, disturbing. But without the creativity given from her videos, Lady Gaga is, well... just crap.

Alright, will you people making bad comments listen? A way I see it, she's using the cross on her...yeah...to show that she's torn about the purity and ways of her sexuality. Also, her switching between the sexual scenes and being the nun, and when they merge it; her trying to decide between the pure and the evil.

I don't see why Christians are getting so upset; my family is christian, and I see deep beauty to this. Even Klein, the director, said himself it was a promotion for the pure; the devouring of the cross was to show she was taking her soul unto herself. He meant no direspect in the least. She was raised by a Christian family.

Also, don't hate her for just the video; you have to remember, not very much is actually made by the artist of the song.

And for those of you who both dislike and like her; you of course have the right to voice your opinion, just don't be rude about it.

I am a bit late, but I saw the video a month later.. I dont watch TV and my web is slow, digital divide.
Well the video is amazing! for me the satanic nun just chocked on the rosary and self-combusted!
Religion and spirituality just do that to your brain!

Alejandro means man's defender and protector (God)
Fernando means aredent of peace (Jesus)
Roberto means bright of shining flame (Holy Spirit)

Clearly a blasphemous insult concealed in an art.

When I first saw this movie I found it strange, but Gaga's talent was still undeniable. Now that I have read into it and have searched her political stand point it makes sense. She is displaying the kinds of struggles that people of any sexual orientation other than "hetero" in the military have suffered. Many, many times in concerts and other times in public she has expressed her support for gay rights including repealing "don't ask dont tell" and "prop 8" and anything else that discriminates based on sexual orientation. It does seem to have some spiritual reference to it, but whether it refers to God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, no one person can claim a single religion and say that it is offense to THAT religion. Or that it is offensive to any religion. Thats not the point here. Live and let live. Love and let love.

This video is supposed to portray a girl's misery living in a world without her beloved. But I just DO NOT see the main point in this video. There are numerous ways of portraying misery WITHOUT MAKING A MOCKERY of religion. Instead of seeing a heartbroken girl, I saw a demon playing with the sacred symbols of my religion. This video is a clear presentation of Satanism.
If you cannot respect the religion, then at least respect the people who believe and are followers of the way, the truth, and the life, who is LOVE, and calls everyone into loving to make the world a better place for all.

Yeah i think if she was trying so hard to portray religion then why not actually do things that Christ did like hmm idk HELP PEOPLE?? Jesus didn't go around dressing like a crazy person and dance around half naked portraying sexual smut everywhere. He served and he sowed His love to others. I'm not saying she has to go around trying to heel the sick or anything. Its great that she wants to be different and voice her opinions in an artistic way but I think its pretty disgusting HOW she does it. If this isn't what's poisoning the mind of children I don't know what is.
